Albania is located on the Adriatic Sea, opposite Italy. It is a country with a population of 3.6 million, with Tirana, the capital, being the biggest city. Its climate is Mediterranean, and its landscape mostly mountainous. 42% of the population are Muslims, the rest is mostly Christian, either Orthodox or Roman Catholic.
When communism was defeated in the early 90's and democracy was for the first time introduced to Albania, things didn't look so rosy. The economy almost immediately went close to colapse, and due to the high unemployment rate there was mass emigration. It is amazing how well Albania recovered from those problems after the introduction of very effective free-market reforms from the mid-nineties on.
Neverthless, it can well be said that Albania is a country that has not yet fulfilled its full potential. First of all, its place is a huge plus: Located on the Mediterranean Sea, and less than 72 kilometres away from Italy, with a long and beautiful coastline, further bordering on Greece, Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro, Albania must be seen as a place with exquisite chances for the future.
There is also huge potential for foreign trade development: In Kosovo, which just declared its independence from Serbia, most people speak Albanian, and in Italy, there is a sizeable Albanian minority, so this is one factor that facilitates business contacts with Albania's neighbours. The shared border with Greece also is a great advantage. No details are known yet, but at some point within one or two decades, Albania is certainly expected to join the European Union.
People who haven't seen Albania since the dismal situation in the early 90's and come to visit it now can hardly trust their eyes when they see how much the country has changed. Albania is a small country, but lately, there have some big (economic) miracles occurring.
We are now very proud to be one of the first families which started an accomodation infrastructure as soon as we were free to do so. It is not ancient, we only started this in the beginning of the 90ies, but since then we have grown our business. People like staying in our appartments and that means that we are doing a good job!
