Tirana

Tirana

Tirana is the capital of Albania and its biggest city, with a population of over 600 thousand and an international airport.

After the fall of communism in the early 90's, Tirana grew chaotically in all directions, without much planning on the part of the authorities. But around the beginning of the new millennium, the city was saved, as one could almost say. Now the public sector actively oversees the development of the city, and Tirana has become a very welcoming place for living. In any case, since 1990 it has been a striking boom town, and it will certainly continue to be one in the future. Since 1990, Tirana has effectively doubled its built-up area. Such rapid growth is rather unprecedented within Europe.

Now Tirana is awash with Western-style post-modern looking office buildings, which form a fascinating combination with the buildings from the communist period, which were often built in a somewhat futuristic style. The Albanian capital is now an international business metropolis with a sizable expat community. Will Tirana manage to double its size again within the next 20 years? Well, perhaps it won't go that far, but certainly it is expected to keep on growing at astonishing rates. Although there has been so much construction going on in Tirana recently, there is still huge future potential, as the surrounding countryside is only thinly populated.

The climate is mild and Mediterranean. Even palm trees can grow in Tirana, which is very nice for the atmosphere, and further stresses its Southern-European style. The city is surrounded by mountains - a fact, which makes for spectacular panoramic views right from the downtown area. For people with an active lifestyle, it is the right place to be: It has lakes and rivers, the Mediterranean Sea is only 20 kilometers away, and the mountains give an abundance of opportunities to hike or climb or to pursue other alpine sports.

For history fans Tirana has a lot to offer: For example, there is the famous Et'hem Bey Mosque, which was completed in 1821, or the Orthodox Church of St Prokop from 1780.

The 12-meter high Mother Albania statue from 1971, built in the style of Socialist Realism, which lately has become very trendy throughout Europe. In Tirana, you will find enough cultural events to keep yourself occupied: There are not only several renowned museums, but also an opera and a ballet, together with lots of recently established alternative cultural institutions, often by the active student community. Tirana is a strikingly charming city, although this charm may often seem a bit unusual.
