Bulgaria is a country with a population of almost 8 million. Belonging to the former Eastern bloc, it joined the European Union in 2007. Its economy is up and rising. The reforms that were conducted after the fall of communism have mostly been successful, though naturally some social and economic problems remain. Bulgaria has the lowest income tax in the EU - it's a flat rate at 10% for every citizen and business. This remarkably liberal and investment-friendly approach has proven to be very favourable for the economy. Bulgaria is set to join the Euro zone at some point, though the exact date has not been decided on - however, this might happen as early as in 2010, and probably not later than 2012.
Bulgaria was the only country in the former communist bloc that had an atmosphere and a climate that could be described as Mediterranean. It was the preferred holiday destination for most of the citizens of the other former bloc members. Travelling to Bulgaria gave them the chance to enjoy its long coast line with the Black Sea, which has a very similar appearance to the French Cote d'Azure.
Now that Bulgaria is part of the West, its beautiful beaches are a touristic hot spot for a huge number of travellers from East and West. They visit Bulgaria not only for its amazingly beautiful nature, but also for its culture: Bulgaria is a country with a rich cultural diversity.
Bulgaria has a strong Turkish minority: Almost 10% of its population belong to that ethnicity.
