Plovdiv is Bulgaria's second biggest city, with a population of almost 400 thousand. It has a long and rich history - and today you can still see the stone-built remains of the Romans, including an amphitheatre which has been basically intact until today. But Plovdiv has monuments from many epochs and in lots of styles - and together they form an appealing composition and convey to the beholder the feeling of being in an outdoor museum.
Plovdiv is now a business hot spot. One reason for this, rather recent, development is the city's very sizable Turkish minority, which is very active in trading with the country of Turkey, Bulgaria's large neighbour to the South.
The city has a mild, almost Mediterranean climate - which you can certainly tell by the fact that an excellent wine is grown there. The city's cuisine is multi-cultural. You won't only find Bulgarian and Turkish specialties, but a wide variety of Greek, Jewish, and Macedonian dishes.
