Sofia Province

It is important to note that Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, does not technically belong to the province of the same name - although it is almost completely surrounded by it. The province has a population of about 260 thousand, while its area is roughly twice the size of the Spanish island of Majorca - just for comparison's sake. Thus Sofia province has a rather low population density despite its immediate vicinity to the Bulgarian metropolis - and this fact is of crucial importance for the province and for the capital city as well.

The citizens of Sofia benefit greatly from having this very thinly populated area nearby, especially regarding recreational activities.

Vice versa, the inhabitants of the province call themselves lucky for living in a rural, very natural environment having the great city of Sofia so close. Indeed, there is much that this mostly mountainous region has to offer: Winter sports, for example. Borovets is one of Bulgaria's top ski resorts - and it is not far from the capital. But during the summer season, the province is also becoming increasingly popular with tourists, and they are not only Sofia dwellers wanting to relax in the countryside, but more and more international visitors as well.

Despite having so much untouched nature, the province actually has some well developed industry, like automotive, computers, or food.

With Bulgaria having done so well in the recent past, these production sites certainly have good reason to face the future optimistically, at the present. Samokov, a town first mentioned under the Ottoman rulers in the 15th century, is the biggest municipality in the province with 30 thousand inhabitants. Borovets, the major ski resort, is virtually a part of it - it is just twelve kilometers away - and Samokov is just about 55 kilometers away from the capital. So for everyone living in Sofia, the option of skiing is always readily available - provided there is snow.
