Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, and with 1.4 million people it is also its biggest city, lying in the Western part of the country and with several rivers going through it.
As a business center, Sofia is very impressive: Since the Bulgarian boom began, no other city has benefited as much from it Sofia. It's now a shiny Western commerce metropolis with a very international flair and many expats living there. It can't be denied, though, that Sofia is a city of financial contrast: There are some very rich people and certainly there are a lot of poor ones too, many of whom senior citizens who have been unable to partake of Bulgaria's economic upswing. When talking about Sofia's history and the monuments that connect us with it, one doesn't know where to begin, but definitely the Church of St. George from the fourth (Sofia's oldest building) and the Church of St. Sophia from the sixth century, which gave the city its name, need to be mentioned here.
