Varna is called Bulgaria's Marine Capital (being located on the coast of the Black Sea). With a population of almost 400 thousand, this nickname is well-deserved, especially since Varna is the kind of city that has something for everyone: It is a business hot spot, a tourist resort and a truly historic place. In fact, Varna is one of Europe's oldest cities. The oldest archaeological material that has been found dates back sixth century before Christ. Varna started out as a Greek settlement, but throughout the ages, it has belonged to many different empires - including the Roman and the Ottoman. Therefor, monuments from a big variety of periods can be found: like the remains of Roman thermae (a bath) or Turkish townhouses.
When the economic reforms after the fall of communism were installed, this historic place came to a new bloom. It is not surprising that Varna, which combines commercial strength with natural beauty, became the home of a big international business community. There is also a lot of culture that these expats have found: for example the annual Varna Summer International Jazz Festival.
The Council of Europe lately decided to make Varna, whose climate is a mixture between Mediterranean and continental, the capital of the Black Sea Euro-Region. However, there is still a lot of potential for further investment and development.
