Croatia and Slovenia are the two former Yugoslav republics which have always been the closest to the West. Both belonged to the Austrian Empire for centuries, and the main religion in both of them is Catholicism. So historically they have always been a part of Central Europe, and when Yugoslavia broke up in the early 90's, they could easily integrate with the rest of Europe politically and economically.
Unlike Slovenia, Croatia (population: 4.5 million) is not yet a a member of the European Union, but it is certainly expected to join soon. Croatia is now a functioning capitalist country, and the free-market reforms installed by the government have been successful.
Of course, if there is one thing Croatia is blessed with it's got to be its natural beauty: It has a long coastline with the Mediterranean Sea, and because of this fact Croatia is clearly in one league with such countries like Italy, Greece, and Spain, the only difference being that in Croatia visitors can still find more unspoiled nature.
Croatia is a diverse country with many different landscapes - and, incidentally, with an unusual shape.
