The name of this Croatian region is certainly world famous - mostly due to the dog breed that originally comes from there. Those beautiful white dogs with their black spots have proven to be excellent ambassadors and PR agents fro Dalmatia.
But it would of course be famous anyway. It is one of the Mediterranean's finest regions, with a population of almost 900 thousand people. The area is about 13 thousand square kilometers big (about half the size of Sicily) - so the population density is not too high by European standards. Of course, tourism is the main sector of Dalmatia's economy. And this is, to make it simple, basically so for the following three reasons, which, combined, create a most appealing mixture.
History indeed plays a great role in Dalmatia and can still be observed through a multitude of monuments. The region started out as a Roman province - and afterwards, it had a most turbulent historic development, seeing empires come and go. The last one of that kind was communist Yugoslavia - but now Croatia is an independent country and communism has disappeared. The country has established a functioning market economy. This means that the development of its tourism can now move along unhindered.
Dalmatia is a multi-cultural region. There is a big Serb minority and a much smaller Italian one. During the Yugoslav civil war Dalmatia saw a lot of bloody fighting.
