Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. Three countries have a part of it: Italy, Slovenia, and, with the biggest share, Croatia. The peninsula is mostly mountainous (highest peak: Mount Vojak, 1401 meters above the sea).
Istria is a historic region, which has seen many glorious times and rulers: Like the Romans, who had a great share in cultivating the region, later the Venetians (Venice is not far - just on the other side of the Adriatic, only about 100 km away), and the Hapsburgs. For a while it belonged to communist Yugoslavia, which in a way was tragic for this open, tolerant, and - multicultural area, as the regime divided it.
Trieste is Istra's metropolis. After a long and turbulent history, it is now part of Italy, but in its heart it is still multi-cultural. This beautiful city, with its picturesque natural port and its ancient monuments, has a population of about 200 thousand. Its cathedral (started in the ninth century) is famous, as are its several castles.
Pula is the most important city on the Croatian side (60 thousand inhabitants). It has a Roman Colosseum (the "Arena") that can easily compete with the one in Rome - further it will present you with its amazing Temple of Augustus. Everyone who lays eyes on this remarkably well-reserved temple will feel like they are in ancient Rome!
