Alexandria (population 4 million) is Egypt's second-largest city. It was founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC - not being the most modern person on Earth, he simply named it after himself. Then the city grew continuously, in size and importance - becoming one of the major sites of the antique Mediterranean. It was famous for its lighthouse (built in the 3rd century BC, between 285 and 247 BC) which was included in the Seven Wonders of the World. However, what was most crucial in giving Alexandria the reputation of being an intellectual hub, was the legendary Royal Library of Alexandria - at the time of its existence the greatest library in the world.
Alexandria is right by the Mediterranean Sea, where it extends for 32 kilometers - which essentially means 32 km of beaches. It has been said that Cairo, the Egyptian capital, is focused on the Arab world, but that Alexandria faces Europe first of all - or even that this city is still somehow European. Well, historically, there is some truth in this, and also one could say that among the two biggest Egyptian cities, Alexandria is the more liberal, the more open and tolerant one. This may well be so because of its Greek-European heritage.
This is a city awash with historic monuments from all periods, and also a modern-day metropolis that has all the amenities that belong to a world-class city, like an excellent cultural life - and a business environment that has always been important, but that at the moment seemingly is about to enter into a new age. The Egyptian free-trade reforms have had a great part in the recent positive trends in Alexandria. Also tourism plays a great role in this city, which is not surprising when you consider its long beaches and its historic significance. Alexandria manages to be a over-dimensional holiday resort, a business hot spot and a place of living history - all at the same time.
