Crete is Greece's biggest island. Its population is about 600 thousand, with 137 thousand of them living in Heraklion, the capital. With an area of about 8000 square kilometers, Crete is more than half the size of the US state of Connecticut.
Crete has to be considered the birthplace of Greek and hence European civilization. Its Minoan culture (ca. 2600-1400 BC) may not be as old as the ancient Egyptian civilization, but it is the oldest that there is in Europe.It was a true and highly developed civilization, that much is known. But then, a part of the fascination that it has on us, is how very mysterious it is. The Minoan culture was not Greek - they spoke an unknown language. But it is not disputed that it was the cradle of Hellenistic civilization.
The shape of Crete is long and thin - so Crete has a long coastline, and wherever you are, the Mediterranean Sea is never too far away: The island is 260 kilo meters long and nowhere wider than 60 at most. And Crete is extremely mountainous, with the Psiloritis being its highest mountain at 2,456 meters above the sea.
Of course and obviously, tourism is the economy's major sector. But in fact, it is not such a mono-culture as one would expect. All kinds of businesses can be found in Crete, and this is only just the beginning of a new trend of diversification that started in the early 90's.
