The Ionian Islands are a group of Greek islands West of Greece, just a few kilometers away from the mainland. The seven main ones of them are called: Corfu, Paxi, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kafallonia, Zakynthos, and Kythira, with the latter one being the only one of them not located to the West of Greece, but to the South - so it must be noted that the Ionian Islands do form a geographic unit, but that Kythira, although it is called an Ionian Island, does not belong to that unit.
Together, the islands cover an area of 2.3 thousand square kilometers, and the population is 220 thousand, with Kefallonia being the biggest, and Corfu the second-biggest of them.
The Ionian Islands have a significant fishing industry, but today clearly their major economic sector is tourism. Indeed, they can easily be considered Greece's main touristic leg to stand on. When people talk about a romantic holiday in Greece by the sea, what first comes to mind are usually the Ionian Islands, with their ragged shapes and picturesque hills and mountains overlooking the blue sea.
Corfu City, naturally located on the island of the same name, is the region's official capital. Its population is only 40 thousand, but it is nevertheless such a vibrant Mediterranean town that in a way it seems like a mini metropolis. Its old town is spectacular, and of course, it is located right on the coast. Visitors are dazzled by that amazing labyrinth of little streets that carries millennia of history on its shoulders.
