Tripoli is Lebanon's second biggest city (population: 500 000). Its name means "triple city" in Greek, and this gives us an idea about how important and powerful Tripoli has been from its very beginning. Of course, in the Mediterranean region, there are not few places with a long history, but Tripoli is certainly among the more special ones of them. There are monuments (some of them in ruins, but most of them intact until today) from virtually every period and regional empire one can think of. Tripoli started out as a Phoenician political center, later it became Greek, Roman, then Ottoman, and all those empires left their architectural imprint - the most recent one being French-style buildings from the time when Lebanon was a French colony about a century ago.
Not belonging to Tripoli technically, though one wouldn't know this from the proximity of the two cities, there is the port city of El Mina - which looks a bit like San Francisco, one could say. It is built on a natural peninsula, surrounded by the blue Mediterranean Sea, and contains an abundance of modern - or post-modern - skyscrapers and other office blocks - and hotels. It is a marvellous place for tourism indeed. Even if interest in history escapes you, there still is the sea with all the aquatic sports that come with it - and hills and mountains on the other side. Lebanon as a whole is one of the Mediterranean countries with the friendliest climate and the most picturesque landscapes.
It is fortunate for the country that its civil war ended in 1990, but Tripoli, being located in Lebanon's Northern part, was never as affected by it as other regions. So now naturally the city and the region by the same name function as one of the commercial engines of the country. The economic reforms that Lebanon lately has been embracing have been proven to be quite successful. Now, in the age of extended globalization and growing tourism, Tripoli is facing its future enthusiastically.
