Kumanovo

Kumanovo is the third-biggest city in Macedonia and has a population of about 100 thousand. (Some sources, however, cite it as Macedonia's second-biggest city.) It is only 40 kilometers East of the capital Skopje, so it can be said that the two form one urban unit. The Serbian border is about 15 kilometers away.

Kumanovo is an essential part of the economic power house that Macedonia has lately become. The city is an important center for trade and industry. Since there is a highway that connects it with Skopje, commuting between the two cities is not inconvenient. Being so close to the capital, Kumanovo is at the heart of the Macedonian economic miracle.

One of its major engines - but its real estates prices have not yet reached the level of the capital. These circumstances make Kumanovo very hot for investors - no matter if their interest is in ground or corporate shares.

But Kumanovo is also a place that appeals to everyone interested in culture. In Kokino, about 30 kilometers North-East from Kumanovo, there is an astronomical observatory from the stone age, which NASA, the American space agency, rated as the fourth important one in the world. It is located on the top of a medium-height mountain and faces East into the rising sun. Lately, it has become something celebrated as the Stonehenge of the Balkans and very trendy for travelers who seek an unusual kind of thrill.

Then there is the Orthodox Church of St. George in the village of Staro Nagoričane, just by Kumanovo. It goes back to the eleventh century and has an abundance of architectural layers and a collection of famous medieval icons. The monument is typical for this region with its long history that saw such an abundance of civilizations come and go.

But now modern times clearly have arrived in Kumanovo. It has a exciting cultural life, with exhibitions, festivals and artistic institutions, and while having its own, very Macedonian flavor (which to some always means a certain relaxed melancholy) it is now part of the one global art scene, and it contributes to it and benefits from it.

One example that has to be cited here is the annual “Days of comedy” festival, which captures the typically Macedonian spirit, that amazing mixture of humor and deep suffering, perfectly well...
