As you know, around the Mediterranean, they speak all kind of languages, like French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Turkish, or Arabic. In fact, Malta is an archipelago, consisting of several islands, with Malta Island being the biggest, while some smaller ones are still uninhabited - thereby creating the perfect environment for adventurers tourists. The Italian island of Sicily is a mere 93 kilometers away.
Throughout Malta's history, Italian influence has been of extreme importance for this little island nation, but actually Malta can only be described as a blend of many, partly very diverse, cultures. Malta's history has been complicated and varied, and it started early: Malta is one of the first ancient civilizations in Europe, and then it was settled by Greeks (around 700 BC), and later it became a vibrant Roman colony with official city status. Luckily for natives and tourists alike, a lot of the wealth from the past is still there to be looked at, like the famous temple complex of Mnajdra, which was built a very long time ago, in fact in the fourth millennium BC - so it is older than the Egyptian pyramids. Despite its age, its is still in remarkably good shape, and it gives historians and actually everyone a pretty good idea what life must have like in the Stone Age.
It is obvious that tourism is the Maltese economy's main leg to stand on, but in fact it is a lot more diverse than you might expect. Malta has always had a healthy industry, and recently the service sector has been gaining a lot of strength. (The fact that Malta is English speaking has been very beneficial for the development of a strong IT sector since the beginning of the Internet age.) In 2004 Malta joined the European Union. This led to a boost of its real estate that hadn't been expected in this magnitude.
