Montenegro is no big country - it is only roughly the size of Northern Ireland and its population is a mere 600 thousand. But of all the countries with a top Mediterranean location, save Albania, it is the one where there is still most to discover. And also, it is a very young country - it gained it independence from its union with Serbia only in 2006. In the Yugoslav civil war of the 1990's, Montenegro was on the "wrong" side - it supported Serbia, and that led to its international isolation. How times have changed! Now that Montenegro has become a country, it is no more hostile to the West, and invites everyone - for business and travelling. That little place has a lot to offer.
"Montenegro" means "black mountain" in Venetian, and this give you an idea about its topography. The country indeed is mostly mountainous or at least hilly, and together with the idyllic Mediterranean Sea, this forms a most picturesque environment! Tourism is now growing sharply in Montenegro, and a lot of development is going on in the country. Even if this nation is not yet a member of the European Union (it intends to join though), it has now clearly become a definite part of Europe! While as a Yugoslav republic Montenegro was mainly focused on production, the main element of its industry is now clearly service - and not only tourism-related. High tech is another major factor.
The language of Montenegro is "Montenegrin" - the inverted commas are used because in fact this is not a real language, but a Serbian dialect. However, now the people of Montenegro like to emancipate themselves from their Serbian roots, and that's why they have taken to regarding it as a proper language. In fact culturally, Montenegro is certainly a part of the Serbian nation. Its religion is mostly Orthodox Christianity. Like Serbians, Montenegrins are deeply in love with music, dance, and poetry. The art they produce, no matter what genre, is melancholic and at the same time mysteriously joyful.
One amazing example of a touristic site in Montenegro is the Ostrog monastery - built into an almost vertical mountain in the 17th century.
