Kotor

Kotor is a little Montenegrin town with a population of only 13 thousand - but its location is most unique. On one side it is completely surrounded by mountains - and on the other side there is the sea - but this comes in a very special shape - it is what many people call the world's Southern-most fjord! And this bay, this natural harbour really does look like a big fjord - only it's not in Norway, but by the Adriatc Sea - and hence Mediterranean! So what you have, is the mysterious and mystic beauty of a Scandinavian fjord - and palm trees under the Southern European sun! Not surprisingly, this mixture is very popular with the tourists...

Kotor is also awash with history. First of all - this town is extremely old. It was founded by the Romans. It's had a long and winding history, and it used to be one of the trade centers in the Mediterranean region. Therefor, Kotor boasts one the best preserved medieval towns in the Adriatic! The famous Cathedral of Saint Tryphon in the old town (completed in 1166) is another example from the Middle Ages. Later on, for some centuries, Kotor belonged to the Republic of Venice. This is why the typical Venetian baroque architecture still features prominently within Kotor.

Naturally, this is a travel destination popular with a big variety of tourists. So currently, there is a lot of development going on within Kotor and the whole region.

Everything is "getting ready for Europe", one could say, as Montenegro, now being an independent country, is no longer opposed to the West (as it was during its union with Serbia) and is expected to join the European Union within some years. Kotor is a place clearly worth more than just a visit. So this historic place is now a world heritage site with the UNESCO - in order to preserve its outstanding beauty for coming generations.
