Certainly, the capital is not only the administrative center of this young nation, but also its commercial one.

In terms of architectural styles, Podgorica has an appealing diversity to offer. A big part of the city, mainly the Stara Varoš (meaning "old town"), was built in Turkish architecture, and there, there are several mosques to be found. Other areas seem more European in style. During the communist time, a lot of buildings in the so-called Brutalist architectural fashion were erected, not rarely right next to old ones from other periods. This fact makes the atmosphere of Podgorica a highly unusual and picturesque one.

Culturally, the Montenegrin capital is quite attractive too. The Montenegrin National Theatre is the most noteworthy example. What strikes visitors most, is the unique mixture of tradition and post-modernism that Podgorica's cultural life stands for. This may be so because of the University of Montenegro, which is also at home in the nation's capital. This diverse (14 faculties) higher-education institution has a strong impact on Podgorica's culture scene - and possibly even more on its night life. Podgorica may not be Europe's biggest capital city - but you wouldn't know that from its night clubs and pubs. Montenegrins love to enjoy life - and since they are by nature truly hospitable, visitors can expect some unforgettable evenings in the world's youngest capital.
