Portugal is continental Europe's Westernmost country. The only other nation it shares a border with is Spain. In a way we can see Portugal as Europe's final climax: You travel through France, then through Spain - and then there is only Portugal left and the Atlantic Ocean begins. Portugal can be described as a Mediterranean country - although it does not have access to the sea of that name. However, it has a very extended coastline, which is especially long for a country of its size, that's due to its elongated shape - and its culture makes it as Mediterranean as any other place: The country has sunny beaches, warm summers and mild winters, beautiful old towns with lively market squares, where the Portuguese like to enjoy seafood and wine - and in temperament they are very similar to Italians or the Spanish - only with a more melancholy note, which has reminded many a visitor of the Slavic soul; the Portuguese express these feelings through their fado - their ancient music that is as beautiful as it sounds sad.
Portugal can in some ways be seen as a smaller version of Spain (although nobody in the country would actually say it like this). But here is one point where the two significantly differ: While Spain has seen a building boom that is completely unprecedented in European history in the last two decades, a similar trend is just beginning in Portugal. Investors know what this means: The smart bets are now on Portugal's real estate, as it is full of potential, and the prices are quite certain to be going in only one direction: Up. A very positive aspect in this is the fact that the Portuguese explicitly try not to repeat the ecological sins that were committed in Spain's boom years - Portugal's current building endeavours are a lot more green.
Portugal is just slightly smaller than Hungary, but its population (10.7 million) is a bit bigger. Anyway, since these basic figures are so very similar, it makes some sense to compare the two countries economically as well: While Hungary's GDP amounts to 155.930 billion US$, that of Portugal is at 244.640 billion. This stark difference is instructive, and it shows that the former countries of the Soviet bloc have not yet caught up to Western Europe, and that there is still reason to say: Let's go West!
