When you surf the Internet, then the chances that the website you are browsing was designed in Braga, are getting bigger and bigger. Braga is the Portuguese capital of IT, and web design is far from everything they do. The city has gained this sort of importance only recently - and it has a lot do with its intellectual atmosphere and its openness for innovations. Braga has two universities, the Universidade do Minho, and the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, which is the country's oldest private institution of higher education. In 2008, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory was opened in Braga. Traditional industry also exists in the city - for example, the German high-tech manufacturers Grundig and Blaupunkt have factories in Braga.
Braga's population is less than 200 thousand, but at the moment it is showing exponential growth. This has greatly invigorated its real estate market. Currently, a lot of construction is going on in Braga - but it is in fact a very old city. It was founded by the Romans as Bracara Augusta in 20 BC, and immediately became an important trade post in the region that is now North-Western Portugal. Today, Braga still boasts a large and impressive old town, with an abundance of noteworthy monuments, like Braga Cathedral (built between the 12th and the 18th century), and Populo Church, a Neo-classical building from the 16th century.
The area around Braga is mostly mountainous, and it is also popular as a travel destination. The city is an important stopping point for outdoor-tourists who like to combine their adventure seeking with some culture and history - and in this department Braga has lot to offer. Living in Braga these days is certainly cool - and it is indeed a good reason to brag!
