This large South-Eastern European country (population: 22 million) is yet another fascinating success story and also one more piece of evidence for the effectiveness of free-market reforms. As was the case with virtually all post-communist countries after the fall of the party tyranny, Romania's economy too declined in the (early) nineties due to the collapse of a big part of its industry. But around the turn of the millennium, it made its comeback - and arguably the most important factor in this has been Romnia's flat-rate income tax of 16%, both for individuals and corporations. As in Bulgaria, this move led to an extremely investment-friendly atmosphere - and so the country managed to recover.
Now Romania is part of NATO and (since 2007) the EU, and it is in every way part of the West. It has a thriving economy, mostly based on services and to a relatively big part on future industries like IT, and is completed integrated into Western Europe - a fact that can also been from the high amount of foreign investment and the many expats living and working in Romania.
Many people from other countries associate Romania foremost with Dracula and vampires, but, strangely, this legend is hardly known in the country, although it cannot be denied that Transylvania is part of Romania. However, in reality it looks very different than in the typical movies: Transylvania is actually an idyllic region with a mild, almost Mediterranean climate. Romania has a lot of beauty to offer anyway: It is not as densely populated as most Western European countries, so there is a lot of space for tourism. Romania's landscapes are diverse, but mostly the country has a hilly nature.
The word Romania derives from the city of Rome, and the Romania language is in fact a descendant of Latin.
