What happened in Serbia in the last few years, can only be called a miracle. Suddenly, things look good for the country. But it was not long ago that Serbia was not only isolated from the rest of Europe, but even at war with it - with the West, in the shape of NATO. With the break-up of Yugoslavia, Europe's only real and serious post-World-War-II armed conflict began: the murderous and atrocious Yugoslav civil-war, with its many theaters in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo. And in each case it was not only Serbia against other former Yugoslav republics, but also against the West and its values.
Now Serbia has a free-market economy and a political system that may not be perfect (which democracy is?) but at least it is now a democratic country with functioning institutions that respects the rule of law. Its estimated GDP for 2008 was $80.717 billion, with a population of over ten million. And its economy is growing quickly, and it is modern too: For example, Serbia's rapidly expanding IT sector is highly impressive. All of this is a success story that ten years ago no-one could have predicted. Even EU-membership has come into reach for the country. So the time to invest in Serbia is now!
Serbia has a mild climate, and topographically it is mostly mountainous or at least hilly. It is an old European country with a long and winding history, which still manifests itself in an abundance of monuments from all European epochs. Even when there was only hostility between Serbia and Europe, the people of Serbia never stopped to be themselves. They have a deep Slavonic culture, fascinating and with its striking joy and deep melancholy it in a way appears paradoxical. It certainly never stops to amaze.
