Slovenia is the only former Yugoslav republic has been fully integrated into the West - it is now a member of the European Union and NATO as well. When Yugoslavia broke up and the ensuing bloody civil war began, Slovenia was the only new-founded country that managed to stay out of it. Instead, it started to transform its economic and political system right away - and this has been a success story.
Slovenia is now the only country from the communist bloc with a living standard as high as in Western Europe, and also it is only Slovenia that has introduced the Euro as early as 2007. Slovenia is a democratic country with a working and effective free market economy.
The Slovenian population is only two million - during their struggle for independence "small is beautiful" was on of their slogans.
Slovenia is a country with a mild, Mediterranean climate. Most of the landscape is mountainous. As stated before: Italy and Austria are its neighbours in the West and North, so, since Slovenia is a relatively small country, the possibility of day trips to these countries always exists. But certainly this is not the only reason why tourist come to this country.
